In 1996—amidst a crisis of plummeting international coffee prices and the emergence of the "specialty coffee" category—seven coffee producers from the Boquete and Volcán-Candela regions united with the goal of gaining wider recognition for their coffee. Recognizing the exceptional quality of their coffee, its status as a vital agricultural product of the Panamanian highlands, and the growing global demand for it, they established the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama (SCAP). Today, SCAP boasts over 50 active members. These members export a diverse range of specialty coffees worldwide and have earned numerous awards and accolades at international competitions. At Black Moon Farm in Alto Quiel, Boquete, Hunter Tedman embraced the power of the rainforest. The result is a regenerative agriculture project demonstrating that environmental conservation not only protects the land but also elevates the quality of the coffee produced. Nature possesses the power to heal itself when given the chance—a process further enhanced when guided by thoughtful leaders like Hunter, who served as SCAP president. Exceptional coffee begins with a healthy ecosystem. Careful post-harvest processing—such as meticulous fermentation and drying—further unlocks the true potential of this already outstanding coffee. Driven by this philosophy, Black Moon secured first place in the Varietal category at the 2024 Best of Panama competition, setting a record-breaking price for the category.
